Harv Notes: Choosing a Galapagos Cruise

April 14th by admin

The Galapagos Islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. With its unique wildlife, stunning landscapes, and clear waters, it's no wonder that the Galapagos is a popular tourist destination. If you're planning a trip to the Galapagos, one of the most important decisions you'll need to make is how to experience the islands. There are options for land-based trips, but the most popular (and recommended) way to visit the islands is by taking a cruise, as it allows travelers to get to more remote areas and in general provides a more in-depth Galapagos experience. There are many different cruise companies that offer trips to the Galapagos, so it can be tough to decide which one is right for you. We have close partnerships that we've developed over many years with only the most professional and experienced cruise operators. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a Galapagos cruise:

Travel Style and Budget:
Galapagos cruises can range in price from a few hundred dollars per person, per day, up to over $1000 per person, per day. It's important to have an idea of how much you'd like to spend on this portion of your trip as we start planning.

Itinerary Length:
Cruises range in length from 4 days up to 8 days (and more is possible, too, by combining itineraries). More days means you'll make visits to more islands and visitor site (cruises visit a couple sites per day, so how many sites you end up getting to see depends purely on the length of cruise you take). Factor in at least one pre-cruise night in the mainland in Quito or Guayaquil due to the logistics of the flights to the Galapagos Islands (you fly from the mainland and start the cruise in the Galapagos) to figure out what cruise length makes the most sense for the timeframe you have for your trip. See a few examples below of what the full itinerary will look like when you combine the mainland with the Galapagos, or even decide to combine the Galapagos with Peru & Machu Picchu or Colombia (both popular options for extending the trip).

Cruise Category:
Galapagos cruise categories come in 4 categories: Luxury, First-Class, Tourist-Superior and Tourist-Class. We work with boats in the Luxury and First-Class categories to offer the best possible experiences to our clients. Luxury Class vessels, in general, will get you larger cabins, extra amenities like private balconies, cuisine that is more refined and gourmet, etc. A good comparison is a 5-star hotel vs. a 4-star hotel.

All of our Luxury and First Class vessels have highly experienced crews and naturalist guides - this is a given across the board on the vessels we have partnerships with. See some of our favorites in both categories below.

Here are a few additional tips for choosing a Galapagos cruise:

Book early:
Galapagos cruises book up quickly and have pre-set departure dates, so it's important to book your cruise as early as possible.

Read reviews:
Before you book a cruise, be sure to read reviews from other travelers. This will give you a good idea of what to expect from the specific cruise that you're interested in. We have a number of reviews from our travelers posted on our site and elsewhere online and can also put you in touch with former travelers who have taken trips similar to the ones you are interested in.

Ask questions:
If you have any questions about a particular cruise, don't hesitate to ask us lots of questions about the on board experience. We have been on board all of the vessels we work with personally so can provide all of the details needed to make sure you're picking the best possible option for you.

When you're ready to start planning, reach out to us and we'll get to work on your trip of a lifetime together!
